On May 11, 2005, President Bush signed H.R. 418, the REAL ID Act into law. This law mandated that every American should have a national ID card by the end of 2008, however, this has been extended to a time in 2010 under the proposed PASS ID Act. Without it, you will not drive, board an airplane, train or bus, enter any federal building, or open a bank account. It is also extremely likely that you will not be able to get a job without it.
